Grady Sizemore didn’t get his first win as a major league manager on Friday, but came pretty close, as the Cubs led 7-0 after the 3rd, but had to hold off a White Sox rally in the 9th.

Garrett Crochet was awful in another short outing – this one due more to lack of effectiveness than pitch limit. The Cubs tagged Crochet for 7 runs on 9 hits in just 2.1 innings.

Oh, and 4 of those 9 hits were homeruns.

The Northsiders didn’t wait to pounce on Crochet, as Ian Happ led off the game by putting one in the seats. After Seiya Suzuki singled to right, Cody Bellinger hit a 2-run blast to right-center field, giving the Cubs an early 3-0 lead.

Crochet would go on to surrender two more homers – of the back-to-back variety – to Isaac Paredes and Nico Hoerner in the 3rd inning, putting the Cubs ahead 6-0 and ending his night.

The Cubs were held scoreless over the final 6 innings and the White Sox started chipping away, with Andrew Vaughn getting the scoring started with a blast that just made it over the center field wall.

Gavin Sheets followed that up with a single and moved into second on a hit by Korey Lee. Dominic Fletcher then hit a ball just out of Nico Hoerner’s reach to make it a 7-2 ballgame. A groundout fielders choice and another knock by Nicky Lopez and the Sox are making a game of it.

Andrew Benintendi had himself a night, hitting 2 homeruns. The first came in the bottom of the 5th inning, as Benintendi led off with a dinger to right to make it 7-5 Cubs. The other was in the bottom of the 7th with 2 outs – another solo shot to bring the Sox within one.

The White Sox would load the bases in the 9th on 2 singles and a walk. But, Vaughn would fly out to right-center to end the game.
